Dr. Stephen Secules

Assistant Professor

Dr. Stephen Secules is an Assistant Professor of Engineering and Computing Education at Florida International University. He has degrees in engineering and acoustics and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction, where his dissertation work focused on equity and culture in undergraduate engineering education. In his work, he uses critical qualitative methods to look at everyday educational
settings in engineering and shift them towards equity and inclusion. Stephen founded
the Equity, Culture, and Social Justice in Education Division of the American Society for
Engineering Education. He also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of
Engineering Education and the 2021 edition of the Cambridge Handbook for
Engineering Education Research.

Dr. Atota Halkiyo

Dr. Atota Halkiyo

Postdoctoral Associate

Dr. Halkiyo is a Postdoctoral Associate at the School of Universal Computing, Construction, and Engineering Education at Florida International University. Dr. Halkiyo graduated in Education Policy and Evaluation from Arizona State University and uses mixed methods but largely qualitative inquiry to study his primary research interest: enhancing higher education equity for all students, particularly those from international and/or underrepresented backgrounds (e.g., women and/or Black students in engineering). He envisions researching and removing possible systemic learning barriers from the curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, and learning environment to make education more responsive to all learners. Halkiyo taught and worked at a university in Ethiopia, where he was also a principal investigator of the “Engendering Higher Education Curricula” research project. Dr. Halkiyo is a Fulbright-Hays Fellow, where he conducted his dissertation research on global education policy transfer from the global West/North to the global South/East, specifically Ethiopia, Africa.

Maimuna Begum Kali

Maimuna Begum Kali

Graduate Assistant

Maimuna Begum Kali is a Ph.D. student in the Engineering and Computing Education program at Florida International University (FIU), in the School of Universal Computing, Construction, and Engineering Education (SUCCEED). She completed her B.Sc. in Computer Science and Engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in Bangladesh. She began her Ph.D. study in Computer Science but changed her program to Engineering and Computing Education a year later. Her broad area of research interests includes exploration of marginalized engineering students’ experience, hidden identity, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), and STEM Education.

Bailey Bond-Trittipo

Bailey Bond-Trittipo

Graduate Assistant

Bailey Bond-Trittipo received a B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from Butler University (2019) and is now an Engineering and Computing Education Ph.D. student at Florida International University. Her research interests include the examination of equity issues in engineering education through a critical lens and K-12 engineering outreach.

Nivedita Kumar

Nivedita Kumar

Nivedita Kumar is a first-year PhD student in Engineering and Computing Education at SUCCEED. She has completed her undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Anna University, India. After graduation, she worked with Accenture Services Pvt. Ltd as a JAVA Developer for two years. She also performed after school tutoring for middle and high school students for more than 5 years. Currently, her broader research interest is situated in broadening the participation of women in Computing and Engineering and the use of feminist theories in technology and engineering.

Tiana Solis

Tiana Solis

Assistant Teaching Professor

Tiana Solis is a non-traditional Engineering and Computing Education Ph.D. student at Florida International University.  She received her B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science from State Univerisity New York (SUNY) Polytechnic (1992,1994).  As a long-time instructor and academic advisor, her mission, and research interests have focused on elevating and broadening the participation of underrepresented learners in the computing field especially women.
